Over a year ago, Shri Gandhi made a pledge to the people of Uttar Pradesh that he would donate his entire MP salary to the families of those farmers who had been forced to end their lives due to the agrarian crisis. He has visited over 20 districts in the State so far, including Agra, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur and Sitapur, Moradabad, Allahabad and Aligarh. By distributing cheques worth Rs 1 lakh to each family, he draws awareness and increases the level of sensitivity towards farmer suffering across the State of Uttar Pradesh.
Over the last few months, Shri Gandhi has used his personal money to build over one hundred permanent structure homes (pucca homes) for people in his constituency Sultanpur, who had never owned pucca homes and never lived in them even in previous generations. His idea was to provide the homeless with a psychological and material cushion against being completely ravaged by poverty, while also providing them with a sense of honour and a sense of community. He handed over the keys to these homes on the 18th of October.
A poet by inclination, Shri Gandhi published his first collection of poems, ‘The Otherness of Self’, at the age of 20. His second volume of poetry, titled ‘Stillness’, was published in 2015. It broke sales records and became the bestselling non-fiction book in India, selling over 10,000 copies in the first two days of its release. He is currently working on his third book of poetry as well as a book of sociological essays on rural India.
